While gaffering some additional shooting for the short film on Dartmoor, some large night time exteriors called for a big moonlight source. For this purpose, I used the 12Kw Arri HMI mounted onto a crane. Detailed location scouting for this was essential for a variety of reasons. Suitability of the ground for such a large crane had to be checked by the operators, distances from the light and the action had to be taken into account and compared to the lamps photo metrics, and decisions on the placement of the electrical generator and cable runs had to be discussed. On the night of the shooting, there was a huge amount of fog which is common. While this did decrease the light output of our 12k, it did make for some very dramatic photos of the shoot.
